The importance of earning top residual income has been recently realized in the media when the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) launched a strike. The writers are looking to claim the residual profits from the Internet and mobile devices and they also risk losing their union. In the balance are all the television watchers who will be disrupted from their regular routines by being forced to watch reruns.

This shows the magnitude and relevancy of residual income if the WGA is looking for the online residual income generated from what is referred to as new media. Apparently writers have been losing leverage as the new media opens up. On November 5, 2007, the WGA called for a strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). There are more than 12,000 writers involved in this strike based on lost residual income so clearly residual income can add up to serious money. The writers had a strike back in 1988 for 22 weeks. At this time, the strike could last even longer since reality television shows are a third of prime time shows and are not scripted.

Residual income is, in fact, the key to financial independence. For working on a project just once, you continue to gain royalties from its ongoing distribution. Obviously residual income can add up to significant earnings if over 12,000 writers are striking about it.
